Product Description

About the Author: Considered one of the pioneers of science fiction, Herbert George Wells was born on 21st September 1866 in England. He was the son of domestic servants who later became shopkeepers. Wells always had a great passion for reading, but with his family struggling to make ends meet, he spent much of his youth shuttling between school and a series of odd jobs. He did everything from working as an apprentice to a draper, to acting as an assistant to a chemist. At the age of eighteen, Wells joined The Normal School of Science in Kensington to study Biology. Here he was taught by T H Huxley. This was a crucial period of his life as it had an immense influence on his writing. Wells received a Bachelor of Science from the University of London in 1888, and began to teach. He enjoyed writing stories and articles alongside his day job, and gradually moved into writing on a full-time basis. He married his cousin Isabel Mary Wells in 1891. The year 1895 was a turning point for Wells, both personally and professionally. It was the year he left his first wife and married a former student, Amy Catherine Robbins. It was also the year when his first major novel, The Time Machine, was published.
