Product Description

Book Description: A Tale of Two C ities (1859) is a novel set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. It ranks among the most famous works in the history of literary fiction. The novel depicts the plight of the French peasantry demoralised by the French aristocracy in the years leading up to the Revolution, the corresponding brutality demonstrated by the revolutionaries towards the former aristocrats in the early years of the Revolution. This has social parallels with life in London during that period. The novel reveals Dickens as a champion of the maltreated poor because of his terrible experience when he was forced to work in a factory as a child. Besides this, the novel also deals with the possibility of resurrection, the necessity of sacrifice to achieve happiness etc. Dickens seems supporting the revolutionary cause, lie often points to the evil of the revolutionaries themselves. He deeply sympathizes with the plight of the French peasantry and emphasizes their need for liberation. The novel shows Dickens in transition. 11c would emerge from this transition as a mature artist, ready to write Great Expectations (1860 1861) and Our Mutual Friend(1864 1865).
